Cope and perform better under pressure

The World Health Organization has included Burn-out syndrome in its 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) as an occupational phenomenon, it is defined as a chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed and it is characterized by increased mental distance from one’s job, feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job and reduced professional efficacy. Realistically we did not need a jazzy name to know this existed as we have probably been there at some point.

Paradoxically we take better care of our personal belongings such as our mobiles, when our phone battery goes from green to red, we immediately stop and recharge. But when our own bodies go into the red zone, we push through. Crazy stuff!

Controlled breathing

TRY THIS: We all know the benefits that exercise can have on the brain, and there are some great studies around the mental benefits of Cryotherapy. If you want something now, try controlled breathing, as it might help to trigger the relaxation response, enabling you to think more clearly and perform better under pressure.

Read more on the power of your own breathing on the Navy Seals article here. Also, add to your calendar 15 minutes of meditation every day, you can do it anywhere!

Haven't tried it yet? We will be covering some great resources on this on our next Get Smarter editions, stay tuned!
