CASE STUDY
The Gymset came to us with a clear, disruptive mission: transform a compact room in Bristol into a premium, community-focused Private Micro-Gym available to everyone. They wanted to create the best PT gym imaginable, but without the normal commitment, contracts, or cost.
September 2022

THE BRIEF
The client needed a fitness space that would:
- Offer Total Privacy: Provide a safe, judgment-free zone for individuals, small groups of friends, or Personal Trainers and their clients.
- Maximise a Compact Footprint: Fit into a small, unique location without sacrificing essential fitness equipment or open functional space.
- Deliver a Premium Vibe: Ensure the space feels high-end, featuring customisable lighting, personal music control, and an uncompromised aesthetic.
- Empower Personal Trainers: Give Bristol-based PTs the absolute freedom to train clients their own way in a professional, private setting.

The Challenge
Jonathan, the founder, had secured a beautiful, highly desirable location in the heart of Clifton, Bristol, surrounded by independent coffee shops and restaurants. However, creating a micro-gym in this premium spot meant navigating a very limited footprint.
The primary challenge was the gym layout. Every square metre had to be incredibly smart. We had to figure out how to pack a small room with a full suite of required fitness equipment while preserving enough open, functional space to make the environment inviting rather than cramped.
Additionally, we had to translate The Gymset’s strong brand identity into physical design elements and overcome several hurdles late in the project, requiring us to remain highly flexible and detail-oriented.
THE STRONGER SOLUTION
This wasn’t just about dropping equipment into a room; it was about engineering an exclusive, frictionless workout experience. We worked closely with Jon and his branding team to meticulously plan the gym design and equipment layout. From the smallest of details relating how the eyes meet the colours and textures the moment a customer steps into the space, to equipment and beyond.
- Bespoke Layout & Spatial Efficiency: To solve the small footprint challenge, off-the-shelf wasn't going to cut it. We designed and installed custom racks and bespoke storage solutions that kept the floor clear and the equipment highly accessible, maximising the functional training area.
- Branded Ground-Up Design: We didn't stop at the layout. We laid down custom-branded gym flooring that immediately anchors the space and reinforces The Gymset's unique visual identity the moment a user walks through the door. A big highlight was the highly custom Turf with a beautiful balanced blend between teal, blues and whites to match their brand approach.

- The "Own Your Space" Experience: The concept was built around the promise of total control. Users aren't sharing the floor; they own it. We curated a mix of best-in-class equipment positioned perfectly for everything from heavy lifting to dynamic lunges. Paired with customisable lighting and a sound system the user controls, the space is tailored for total immersion.
- A Collaborative Fit-Out: Expertise and communication were key to overcoming late-stage hurdles. Our team provided deep product knowledge during the selection phase and paired it with highly attentive customer service to ensure every detail of the final concept was executed flawlessly.

The Result
We successfully delivered a Private Fitness Space with real character, a highly functional layout, and a rock-solid brand identity. It stands as a perfect, judgment-free alternative to crowded traditional gyms.
Here’s what Jonathan, the founder, had to say about the partnership:
‘Being a new gym and concept we tried out a couple of suppliers to fit-out our space but Stronger stood head and shoulders above. Steve provided his expert knowledge throughout the ordering process, followed up by extremely attentive and responsive customer service. The mix of the kit fitted perfectly the final conceptual idea we needed for GymSet’
FAQ
GYM DESIGN
Maximising a small footprint requires smart, bespoke design. For The Gymset Clifton, we utilised custom racks and integrated storage to keep the floor clear. By carefully selecting multi-functional, best-in-class equipment, we ensured the small room offered both heavy lifting capabilities and open functional space without feeling cramped.
A successful micro-gym offers a premium, frictionless experience that rivals high-end home gyms. It must provide total privacy, a judgment-free environment, and high-grade equipment. Allowing users to control their environment, through customizable lighting and personal music, elevates the space from a simple gym to a personalized workout sanctuary.
In a boutique or micro-gym setting, brand identity builds trust and community. Integrating custom-branded gym flooring and bespoke storage solutions ensures the space feels professional, cohesive, and visually striking, setting it apart from standard local gyms. It is important for the brand to have the same consistency digitally than inside the gym itself; there should not be a brand disconnect between how your member Thinks and Feels about you online than in your gym.
The equipment mix must be highly versatile. You need accessible starter weights for fitness newbies alongside robust, high-grade racks and lifting equipment for advanced users and Personal Trainers. Working closely with experts to curate a "best-in-class" kit list ensures you precisely match the intended conceptual idea and user demographic. Whilst PTs will want certain level of expert equipment, you still need to have a balance between what is what ‘they’ will use themselves, vs what the actual member and user needs. Sometimes that line can get blurry and the people at the table making those key decisions need to have that clear. 1 Start with the beginners list as that by default has to be in the PT list, then review budgets and space requirements and continue with your PT lists.
