What do parents look for when choosing a school?
Why Fitness Facilities Are Becoming Part of the Independent School Experience
Academic results. Culture. Pastoral care. The arts. Sport. Facilities. Opportunities. Increasingly, however, the standard expected across all of those areas is rising.
It's something we've seen first-hand through our work with Frensham Heights, an independent day and boarding schoolin Surrey which recently invested in upgrading its fitness provision.
And what's particularly interesting about the project isn't simply the gym itself. It's what happened next.

BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL "SPORTS SCHOOL"
Frensham has a particularly strong reputation for creativity and the performing arts, with extensive provisionacross art, music, dance and theatre. But that doesn't mean sport sits on the sidelines.
The school's philosophy is deliberately broad, with academic, creative, physical and other disciplines treated as equally important parts of a student's education. Its sports provision ranges from traditional competitive games through to climbing, high ropes, swimming, gym-based fitness, Pilates and yoga.
That reflects something we're increasingly seeing across independent education.
High-quality fitness and wellbeing facilities are no longer relevant only to schools renowned for producing elite athletes.
Students exercise in increasingly diverse ways. Parents are more aware of the importance of physical and mental wellbeing. And when families tour a prospective school, they're assessing the complete environment their child will experience. That puts facilities under a different kind of spotlight.

When An Existing Gym No Longer Reflects The School
Frensham already had fitness provision, but the existing gym had become dated and no longer reflected either the experience the school wanted to offer students or the standard of its wider facilities.
The initial brief was to make a considered investment in a more contemporary training environment that could support a broad range of students and different ways of exercising.
Working with Frensham, Stronger Wellness developed a space incorporating S7R squat racks, a dedicated sled track, plyometric equipment, a comprehensive dumbbell and functional training provision, alongside cardiovascular equipment. Not to forget the special children and young adults range from Hyperwear USA. Soft neoprene equipment that allows young adults to train freely and learn without the fear of being hurt as even for those moments when they might miss, when it lands it doesn’t hurt.
Rather than filling the room with as much equipment as possible, the emphasis was on creating a versatile environment.
Students can strength train. They can work on cardiovascular fitness. They can develop power and athleticism. They can use the space for functional training.
And importantly, the facility isn't reserved exclusively for students already competing at a high level.
THE RESULT NOBODY QUITE EXPECTED
Perhaps the most interesting part of the Frensham project has been the response since opening.
While the initial investment was relatively modest, feedback from existing students and parents has been extremely positive.
Just as importantly, the upgraded gym has made an impression on prospective families visiting the school.
That impact matters greatly. A school tour is ultimately a collection of impressions. Families see classrooms, accommodation, theatres, dining spaces, sports facilities and outdoor environments and gradually build a picture of what everyday life at that school might look like for their child.
A tired fitness facility can feel noticeably out of step with an otherwise exceptional campus.
A modern one communicates something different: that physical wellbeing is being invested in alongside every other part of the student experience.
“The response to the new gym has been incredibly positive. We’ve had great feedback from our existing students and families, but what has been particularly interesting is how well the space has been received by prospective parents when they visit the school. The success of that initial investment has given us real confidence in the value of the facility, and we’re now looking at how we can build on it and develop the provision even further.”

FROM FIRST INVESTMENT TO FURTHER DEVELOPMENT
The response has been strong enough that Frensham is now considering a further phase of investment and an expansion of its fitness provision.
For us, that's probably the most meaningful measure of whether the first project worked.
Not simply that the equipment is being used, but that the school has seen enough value from the initial development to want to build upon it.
And it highlights an important point for other schools considering their own facilities.
You don't necessarily need to begin with a huge capital project.
Sometimes a carefully planned first phase allows a school to understand demand, observe how students use the space and gather feedback before committing to something larger.
In Frensham's case, that first investment effectively created its own business case for the next.

WHAT CAN OTHER SCHOOLS LEARN?
One of the biggest lessons from Frensham is that improving fitness provision doesn't necessarily have to begin with a major redevelopment.
Start by asking what the existing space is currently doing.
Does it reflect the quality of the wider school?
Can different students use it confidently?
Does the equipment support the ways young people actually want to train today?
And what impression does it create for a
family seeing the school for the first time?
A relatively focused investment can sometimes answer those questions surprisingly effectively.
For Frensham, the response to phase one has already prompted conversations about phase two. Perhaps that's the best result any initial investment can deliver. Not simply a better gym, but evidence that the space has become a genuinely valued part of school life.
